WHEN NATURE CALLS: Children from Windhoek’s Okahandja Park informal settlement are pictured defecating next to the road, amid a shortage of sanitation facilities in the area. According to World Health Organisation and United Nations Children's Fund’s joint monitoring programme data from 2020, Namibia ranks sixth for the highest rates of open defecation in the world at 47%. The nation’s severely low levels of sanitation stand in stark contrast to the rest of southern Africa, a region where Namibia ranks the worst for sanitation coverage. The country’s rates of open defecation are more than double Angola’s to the north and almost five times higher than that of Botswana or Zambia.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO KATIMA: Over 10 000 people are expected to attend the country’s 34th Independence Day celebrations in Katima Mulilo tomorrow. The celebration will be held under the theme ‘A people united for prosperity’, and President Nangolo Mbumba will deliver the keynote address. “It’s the first time the Zambezi Region is hosting the independence celebrations, creating an exciting atmosphere,” information ministry executive director Audrin Mathe said. Earlier this week, Zambezi governor Lawrence Sampofu said all accommodation facilities in the region are fully booked for the event. He further urged Namibians to visit Zambezi not only for the Independence Day celebrations, but also to see the beauty the region has to offer. In the photo, members of the Namibian Defence Force are seen at the Katima Mulilo Sports Complex, readying themselves for the big day.
