Windhoek dams below 30%

Windhoek’s average dam levels have dropped to just below 30%, with no current prospects of rain.

The total average of Namibia’s dams has dropped to 63.5%, compared to last season’s 76.8%.

In the central areas of Namibia, the average dam level is a low 32.2%, while last season, this stood at 50.6%.

The Swakoppoort Dam is at 56.6% of its capacity, the Von Bach Dam is 19.5% full and the Omatako Dam is empty.

This three-dam system supplies Windhoek with water and their total average level stands at 29.3%, compared to last season when they averaged 48.2%.

Meanwhile, the Friedenhau Dam is 63.4% full and the Goreangab Dam is at 99%.

Other dams

In the south, the average dam level stands at 71.2%, compared to last season when it was 85.7% full.

The Neckartal Dam, which is Namibia’s largest reservoir, is at 89.4% of its capacity. Last season, it was 96.9% full.

The level of the Hardap Dam near Mariental has dropped to a mere 28.7%, the Naute Dam is at 55.4% and the Oanob Dam 53% full.

The level of the Dreihuk Dam is at 0.5%, while the Bondels Dam is empty.

In the east of the country, the total average of dam levels stands at a mere 5.9%, far less than last season’s 18.6%.

The Otjivero Main Dam is 7.8% full, the Tilda Viljoen Dam is at 28.8% and the Daan Viljoen Dam stands at 4.4%.

In other parts of the country, the Olushandja Dam in the Oshana Region is 41.5% full, compared to last season’s 12.3%.

Both the Omaruru Delta Dam, located in Erongo, and the Otjozondjupa's Omatjenne Dam are empty, the same as last season.

Scorching temperatures

While some parts of the country experienced some rainfall on Tuesday, scorching temperatures are still being experienced.

According to the Meteorological Service of Namibia, Sesfontein will record a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius today, while in Oshakati, Rundu, Ondangwa and Outapi, the maximum will be 39.

A high of 38 will be experienced in Eenhana, Katima Mulilo, Khorixas, Nkurenkuru, Okahao, Okaukuejo, Okongo, Omaruru, Omuthiya, Opuwo and Tsumkwe.

In Windhoek, the maximum will be 35.
