Rainy weekend brings joy
After the heavens opened as of last Thursday over a dry Namibia, good rainfall fell widely over large parts of the country over the weekend, and several rivers began to flow.
Not only did this bring hope and relief to farmers grappling with the prolonged drought, but the Von Bach Dam, following rainfall in its catchment area, recorded an inflow of 4.799 million cubic metres. According to NamWater's dam bulletin, the dam was about 9.8% full last Monday, with its level rising to 10.1% by Friday morning.
Good rainfall was recorded in the north, north-east, east and central areas, extending to the Khomas Hochland, and even in the south at Maltahöhe and Bethanie, reaching as far as the north-west at Kamanjab and Epupa.
At the Omeya Golf Estate south of Windhoek, 80 mm was recorded, 70 mm at Schlip, 60 mm in the Khomas Hochland, 54 mm 72 km south-east of Windhoek, 50 mm at Otjiwarongo and on the Fiegenfeld farm, 40 km south-east of Klein Waterberg, 49 mm at Groot-Aub south of Windhoek and 40 mm at Omarunga Lodge near Epupa.
Rain across the country
On the Guinas See farm by the Guinas Dam, 40 mm fell from last Sunday to yesterday, 38 mm on the Rus and Vrede farm near Leonardville, and on Prospect farm in the Khomas Hochland. Across at Steinheim, 34 mm of rain was recorded.
Erindi farm received 33 mm over two days, Etosha Heights Private Reserve recorded 30 mm, Gobabis area received 26 mm of rainfall, Kombat 25 mm and on the Teufelsglucht farm, 45 km north of Windhoek, 24 mm of rain fell.
More rainfall was recorded at Elandsdraai farm, 70 km from Gobabis towards Botswana, 22 mm was recorded, and 20 mm on the Dirichas West farm, between Kalkrand and Maltahöhe in the Hardap catchment area, as well as on the Hippo farm north of Gobabis.
West of Kamanjab, the Katemba River flowed after 32 mm was recorded at the Katemba farm.
North of the Etosha National Park at the Gondwana King Nehale Lodge, 20 mm of rainfall was measured and omurambas (ephemeral rivers) flowed.
Windhoek residents recorded between 10 and 15 mm across the city, while 13 mm was reported in the Otavi valley, 6 mm at Wilhelmstal and 5 mm at the Elisenheim Estate south of Windhoek.
