Rain falls far and wide over the weekend
News in short
Widespread showers fell across the country over the weekend, particularly in the dry south, with more rain forecast for certain areas.
The Namibia Meteorological Service predicts moderate to heavy rainfall with single to isolated, as well as isolated to scattered thundershowers that may occur in the Kunene, Erongo, Otjozondjupa, Khomas and Hardap regions this week.
Good showers fell in the south in Rehoboth, Keetmanshoop, Karasburg, Grünau, Leonardville, Gochas, Aranos, Aroab, Koës, Helmeringhausen and in the Namib.
Despite showers of 10mm that occurred at Mariental and between 18mm and 29mm that fell at the Hardap plots, the chairman of the Hardap Farmers Association, Dawie de Klerk, told Namibia Media Holdings there was no inflow into the Hardap Dam. "There were only isolated showers, but unfortunately no run-in," he said.
According to the latest dam bulletin, that dam's level currently stands at 12.2%.
In the north, between 14mm and 18mm fell at the Otavi Valley, 19mm at Guinas and 5mm at Grootfontein.
In Windhoek, between 5mm and 50mm was recorded in various suburbs. At Brakwater and the Elisenheim estate north of the capital, a heavy hailstorm saw 50mm falling in just 35 minutes, causing damage to trees. At the farm Drie Krone, east of Windhoek, 30mm of rain was recorded.
