JUST IN: Be prepared for flash floods in Windhoek
The City of Windhoek has cautioned visitors and residents that capital might experience further flash floods and strong winds in the next couple of weeks and perhaps throughout the rainy season.
In a public notice issued by the municipality, it said following heavy rains that Windhoek received on 14 December, recording measurements for that day were between 88 mm and 110 mm.
“The seasonal rainfall forecast points to normal to above normal rainfall, thus the likelihood of heavy rainfall events followed by hailstorms and lightning, which can be destructive to infrastructure and humans, cannot be ruled out.”
The municipality said that such situations may lead to damage to properties, power cuts, flooding and the use of some roads that may be unsafe.
It said that residents are advised to refrain from erecting houses within riverbeds, on hills or any unsafe place.
The municipality explained that flash floods usually result from intense storms, dropping large amounts of rain within a short period.
Forecasts indicate that Windhoek has a 63% and 68% chance of rain on Friday and Saturday respectively.
