Heavy rain showers predicted for the north

The Namibia Meteorological Service has issued a weather warning for today, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected to continue in places in the northern regions.

At Caprivi River Lodge in the Zambezi Region, rains fell again yesterday after 60 mm had been recorded in the rain gauge that morning.

The lodge has already received 238 mm of rainfall for the season. In Rundu, 53 mm was recorded, 50 mm at the Zambezi Vocational Training Centre, 23 mm at Katima Mulilo Airport and 15 mm at Ondangwa.

Other rainfall figures recorded at weather stations in the northern regions include: Kanovlei 26.4 mm, Kalimbeza 23.9, Sachinga 13.2, Dudukabbe 12.9, Bagani 3.3, Hamoye 2.9 and Waterberg 1.6 mm.

The King Kauluma settlement in the Oshikoto Region recorded 4 mm, Okondjatu 3.2 mm and Okahua and Onghwiyu 2 mm, respectively.

At Seeis, 8 mm was recorded, as well as at the farms Virunga and Charakoe, 80 km north-northeast of Stampriet. At Arnhem, 6 mm was recorded, 5 mm at the Reitz farm near Leonardville and between 5 mm and 22 mm at Geikous, Alabama and Kamana to the north.

The weather office predicts partly cloudy and hot to very hot weather for today in the far south-west. Elsewhere, it will be partly cloudy and hot to very hot, with isolated to scattered thunderstorms in the northern regions. Windy conditions are expected to persist in the interior.

Half full

According to NamWater's latest dam report, Namibian dams are collectively at 51.9% capacity.

In the central part of the country, the Von Bach Dam is currently 23.8% full after water was pumped from the northern sources and the Swakoppoort Dam. Swakoppoort is currently 23.5% full and the Omatako Dam is 2.2% full.

In the south, irrigation is once again being allowed from the Hardap Dam, which is now 16.3% full after a loss of 1.003 million cubic metres of water. The Neckartal Dam is 78.3% full, the Nautedam is 28.3% and the Oanob Dam near Rehoboth is 31.1% full.

In the east, the dams near Gobabis are collectively 1.9% full, with the Daan Viljoen Dam at 11.2% and the Tilda Viljoen Dam at only 0.8%.

Rivers low

The Zambezi River at Katima Mulilo measured a level of 0.58 meters on Monday. This water level is considerably lower than the 1.38 metres recorded at the same time last year.

The level of the Kavango River at Rundu dropped over the weekend from 5.72 metres to 5.55 metres on Monday. However, the water level is slightly higher than the 5.50 metres recorded at the same time last year.

The Kunene River at Ruacana recorded a flow of 465.08 cubic metres per second on Monday.

The levels of the Orange River at Blouputs and Sendelingsdrift stood at 0.40 metres and 0.37 metres, respectively, on Monday.
