Dams 77% full as rainy season nears
Good rainfall forecasted for SADC
The country's three largest dams are – respectively - 60.6%, 97.5% and 90.2% full at the moment.
The total average level of Namibia’s dams has dropped to 77.9%, with five of the country’s dams still above 80% full.
With the rainy season around the corner, predictions indicate that the bulk of the SADC region is likely to receive good rainfall from October to March 2023.
According to NamWater’s latest dam bulletin issued on Monday, the average of dam levels in the central areas of Namibia stood at 52.7%, compared to last season’s 74.9%.
The Swakoppoort Dam is now at 83.5% of its capacity, the Von Bach is 46.9% full and the Omatako Dam is at 5.8%
Meanwhile, the Friendenhau Dam is 83.2% full and the Goreangab Dam is at 97.2%.
In the south, the average level of the dams stands at 86.8% - slightly higher than last season’s 86.2%.
The Hardap Dam is 60.6% full, the Neckartal Dam’s level stands at 97.5% and the Naute Dam is 90.2%.
These are the three largest dams in the country. Last season, Hardap was 58.9% full, Neckartal 96.3% and Naute was at 90.2%.
Further, the level of the Oanob Dam stands at 74.6% and the Dreihuk Dam at 8.7%, while the Bondels Dam is empty.
In the east of the country, the total average of dam levels is 19.4%, while last season it was 33.6%.
The Otjivero Main Dam is 28.9% full, the Tilda Viljoen Dam 44% and Daan Viljoen Dam 48%.
In other parts of the country, the Olushandja Dam in the Oshana Region is 13.3% full, while the Omaruru Delta Dam in Erongo and the Omatjenne Dam in Otjozondjupa are both empty.
