The two finalists in this year's 'Tourist of the Year' competition will be wined and dined at several Namibian lodges before a winner is chosen in September.

Hendrina Ashetu and Kaino Awala will try to outdo each other with their content from these trips as they keep Tourismus Namibia viewers up to date on all their adventures.

The competition has taken a different approach this year. The organisers of the Namibia Tourism Expo invited members of the public to submit Instagram photos or videos of their travels to the Synergi chatbot (available on WhatsApp via 085 785 6231). Their content was posted to the Tourismus Namibia social media pages, and after the Easter long weekend, their posts were fed into an artificial intelligence (AI) programme which compiled videos. During a live show at the expo yesterday, Ashetu and Awala were introduced as the two finalists who will now be treated to trips to various Namibian lodges in the Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TCFA).

Abenab Lodge and Safaris in the Grootfontein area, Kayova River Lodge outside Rundu as well as Ngepi Camp and White Sands Lodge and Camping - both near Divundu - will host the finalists, who will feed photos and video material to the Tourismus Namibia Instagram page.

As their trips draw to a close, their footage will once again be fed to the AI programme, and the resulting video clips will be presented to the public for voting. The ultimate winner will be crowned 'Tourist of the Year' 2024 on World Tourism Day on 27 September, walking away with a cool cash prize of N$10 000.
