NTB board tasked to appoint acting CEO
The new board members of the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) board members have been directed to appoint an acting CEO on an urgent basis.
The board was inaugurated on Monday.
NTB is currently without a CEO as Digu //Naobeb's term ended earlier this year and was not extended again.
The board members are appointed for a three-year term period, effective from 1 November to 31 October 2026 in terms of the Public Enterprises Governance Act and the NTB Act.
The board consists of Janette Fourie (chairperson), Olavi Hamwele (deputy chairperson), Ally Karaerua, Maggy Mbako, Ngivitjita Zatjirua, Efraim Nkoshi and Rachel Nathaniel-Koch.
Find a CEO
Shifeta said one of the immediate tasks of the board will be to appoint a CEO.
He said that //Naobeb's tenure as CEO came to an end in August; however, the board requested extensions.
“There was another request for an extension, and I said no, and I have instead directed that it is better to appoint one of the managers as acting CEO for now.
Duties and focus
Shifeta said among the board's duties are to promote tourism.
Moreover, the board is tasked with promoting the development of the tourism industry and environmentally sustainable tourism by actively supporting the long-term conservation, maintenance and development of Namibia's natural resource base.
“The appointment of this board is being made at the most crucial time in the tourism sector when it is in its full recovery mode after the Covid-19 pandemic.”
NTB is also tasked with regulating the industry and marketing and promoting Namibia.
Shifeta said Namibia is keen to improve areas such as the development of new products and route development across the country to spread tourism and economic activities to the rest of the country.
Improvements are also expected in the development of cultural heritage tourism products and packaged experiences and in popularising the gastronomy experiences of Namibian cuisine.
