Namibia 7th most peaceful country in sub-Saharan Africa
News in short
Namibia has been ranked among the top 10 most peaceful countries in sub-Saharan Africa, earning the seventh spot on the list.
Last year, Namibia ranked ninth.
This is based on the Global Peace Index, which measures the peacefulness of countries as determined by 23 quantitative and qualitative indicators, each weighted on a scale of one to five.
The lower the score, the more peaceful the country.
With a score of 1.859, Namibia impressively improved its global peacefulness ranking from 62nd in 2022 to 56th in 2023.
The country was, however, ranked highly for its perceived perception of criminality in society, with a score of 3.7 out of five, while its homicides scored it four out of five.
Low scores of two were received for organised conflict, violent crimes and political instability.
Mauritius topped the list, followed by Botswana, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Senegal and Madagascar. The last three spots on the top 10 were filled by The Gambia, Zambia and Liberia.
South Sudan was listed the least peaceful country in the region.
