Theofelus warns against social media abuse
News in short
Information minister Emma Theofelus has urged Namibians to exercise "caution and responsibility" on social media, saying recent insults directed at former presidents Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba were unfortunate.
In a statement yesterday, Theofelus said government remains committed to protecting citizens' rights and freedoms, but such rights should not be abused. "It is not necessary to legislate the moral conduct of individuals," she said.
The youthful minister cited the manner in which social media was used to speculate about Nujoma’s recent hospitalisation, with some announcing on social media that he had died. Nujoma was recently discharged from hospital.
“As we navigate the digital landscape, let us remember the importance of upholding ethical standards, verifying information before sharing, and promoting constructive and respectful online interaction and dialogue,” the minister said.
