Mamelodi Sundowns' under-18 team showcased their dominance by clinching the Hophydro International Football Cup with a resounding 6-1 victory over the Khomas regional team at the CBS Arena in Windhoek.
The boys in blue and yellow displayed their prowess from the outset, netting four goals in the first half. Despite making several second-half changes, Sundowns maintained their intensity, adding two more goals to seal the commanding win.
Opening Match
The CBS Academy U18 team faced the South African giants in the tournament's opening match on Friday. Sundowns emerged victorious with a 2-0 win, courtesy of late goals from standout players Oarabile Booysen and Selwyn Stevens.
Although Sundowns controlled the tempo, CBS Academy created several chances in the first half. CBS goalkeeper Phileas Janka made crucial saves to keep the hosts in contention, but Sundowns found their rhythm in the second half. A precise through ball set Booysen up for a one-on-one finish, breaking the deadlock. Stevens capitalized on a defensive error to secure the win in the dying moments.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Sundowns head coach Michael Manzini highlighted the importance of long-term development. “The boys have been playing together for two seasons. It’s not just about this tournament—it’s about learning, building friendships, and developing both technically and mentally,” Manzini said.
