Debmarine Namibia Premiership gets underway
It's official
The Namibia Football Association (NFA) confirmed yesterday that the Debmarine Namibia Premiership will kick off this coming weekend at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium in Olympia.
African Stars and Unam FC will make history on Sunday as they become the first teams to feature in the new Debmarine Namibia Premiership.
This will also be an historic day for the players and coaches who will be part of the ceremonial league kick-off on Sunday.
This is after a lengthy discussion with the football clubs came to the conclusion that the league will start, despite queries, after Debmarine Namibia sponsored the league with N$13 million for the season.
"The NFA has the pleasure to inform you that the 2022/23 Debmarine Namibia Premiership kicks off with African Stars and Unam Football Clubs on Sunday 6 November at 17:00," the statement reads.
Concerns remain
This is after a meeting between NFA officials and clubs resolved to start football as soon as possible despite protests from some clubs, which felt it was too soon to start the league.
It is understood that some clubs had barely started training when the announcement was made, and that some clubs had not registered any players on their teams ahead of the league's commencement.
Teams like the African Stars and Unam are however ready for action and have secured enough players to start the season.
Welcome
"The gates open at 13:00 and football lovers are invited to enter the stadium early enough to avoid any potential gate pressure and stampede.
"The entrance fee is N$30 and adequate entertainment and security are arranged for football lovers and vehicle protection inside and outside the stadium," NFA’s corporate communications desk wrote.
Some teams have already started their preparations, with clubs like African Stars, Okahandja United, and Life Fighters having played in a preseason tournament over the past two weeks.
