Namibia's senior women’s national football team, the Brave Gladiators, defeated the Gambia Scorpions 2-0 in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) match played at the Stade El Abdi Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, on Sunday.

Turkish-based Zenatha Coleman scored a brace for her side.

The first goal was scored in the 15th minute, whereas the second goal came in the 37th minute.

In the first leg played on Thursday, the Gladiators defeated Gambia 3-2. Namibia’s three goals were scored by Lovisa Mulunga and Ivonne Kooper.

The Queen Scorpions came back from two goals down to level the scores with a brace from forward Fatou Kanteh. However, Namibia's Coleman scored a third goal and held on for a famous victory.

On aggregate, the Namibians won 5-2.

Work ahead

The Gladiators will play the winner between Rwanda and Ghana, with the winner in the second round set to automatically progress to next year’s Wafcon tournament, which will take place in Morocco.

However, before that happens, the Gladiators still have two competitions to take part in. They will now turn their attention to the Cosafa Women’s Championship slated for 4 to 15 October in Durban, South Africa, and will thereafter concentrate on the 2024 Paris Olympic qualifiers against Morocco.

Morocco, which Namibia will face, reached the last 16 of the Fifa Women’s World Cup after beating Colombia and knocking out Germany in their first-ever appearance at the tournament.

The first leg will be staged on 23 October, with the second leg to be played on 31 October.

For preparation for the latter clash, the team received a sponsorship of N$200 000 from the Namibian Diamond Trading Company.
