Namibian Olympic silver medallist Christine Mboma released a statement on Friday in which she confirmed her instructions to her legal representatives, Francois Erasmus and Partners, to cancel the agency agreement between Newton Sports Agency and herself after months of correspondence proved fruitless.
On 22 September, Namibian Sun, on its Facebook page, broke the news that Mboma had roped in lawyers to assist her in cancelling her contract with the agency.
Five days later, the agency, through their lawyers, Brookes Attorneys, informed this reporter of their intent to proceed with litigation against Namibian Sun for alleged false reporting and demanded the removal of the social media post. The post was not removed, and on Friday, Mboma’s team informed Namibian Sun and other news outlets, in a press statement, that they had made their intentions clear to no longer do business with the agency.
‘Cancel the agreement’
“Having read several press reports in the last few days regarding my relationship with Newton Sports Agency, I wish to state categorically that I instructed my legal representatives, Messrs Francois Erasmus and Partners, to cancel the agency agreement between Newton Sports Agency and myself,” Mboma’s statement noted.
“My lawyers indeed cancelled the contract in writing on 7 September 2022, receipt of which was acknowledged by Newton’s lawyers, Brookes Attorneys of Durban.
“The cancellation was based on Newton’s failure to timeously and comprehensively reply to my demand to provide a full and comprehensive exposition and reconciliation of my financial affairs with the agency. After months of attempts to obtain a full explanation, Newton Agency still failed to provide me with all relevant and requested data. As a result, I cancelled the agreement.”
“I’m currently taking advice on further steps to be taken to resolve the issues which led to the cancellation; hence I will not be commenting any further until further notice,” Mboma’s statement read.
Before going to print, Newton Agency did not respond to questions as to whether Mboma’s statements are true.
The agency also continues to represent another Namibian athlete, Beatrice Masilingi, who was formerly coached by Henk Botha.
