Big prizes up for grabs at 2024 Oshakati Mayoral Cup

Tuyeimo Haidula
The annual Oshakati Mayoral Cup continues to grow from strength to strength, with an initial investment of N$40 000 for the inaugural games having increased to N$92 000 allocated for the fourth edition of the tournament in May.

This year's allocation surpasses the previous year's funding by N$10 000.

To enhance the games' appeal, council has also set aside designated areas for youth to sell goods to participants and visitors to the event, Oshakati mayor Leonard Hango said.

The upcoming edition is slated to take place from 9 to 12 May at the town’s Independence Stadium.

Hango said registrations for teams are now open.

Giving back

The tournament is open to residents of Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena and Oshikoto in an effort to encourage a sporting spirit within the four regions.

“We are dedicated to reviving sport in the northern part of the country. Scenes from last year's games have been an indication that the people are hungry for sports and as leaders, we need to invest more in sporting facilities,” Hango said.

The mayor said investing in sports forms part of council's corporate social responsibility strategies and offers a chance to give back to their communities.

“We don’t just think about issuing municipal bills. We also want citizens to reap the benefits,” he said.

Hango said investing in sports is not only for entertainment value.

Encouraging youth to participate in sports also aims to rid the streets of crime by keeping the youth engaged in healthy activities and motivating them to invest in their future.

Big prizes

The tournament will feature youth soccer, legend soccer, women’s soccer and netball games.

The prize for the winners in the youth soccer division is N$22 000, a trophy and gold medals.

The runners-up will receive a N$14 000 prize and silver medals.

The winners of the legend soccer category, consisting of players aged 37 or older, will receive N$9 000, a trophy and gold medals.

The second-place winners will be awarded N$6 000 and silver medals, while the semi-finalists will be awarded N$3 000 each.

In the women's football division, the champions will be rewarded N$4 000 prize money, a floating trophy and medals. The second-place winners will receive N$3 000 and silver medals, and the semi-finalists will be awarded N$1 500.

In the netball category, winners will net a N$4 000 cash prize, a trophy and gold medals, while the runners-up will receive N$3 000 and silver medals, and the semi-finalists will receive N$1 500 each.
