Pre-tournament faves live up to title
Jacques Theron led his team to an action-packed victory in the inaugural Windhoek Draught Franchise 10-a-side rugby tournament yesterday.
The Windhoek Draught team led by scrum half Jacques Theron lived up to their billing as one of the pre-tournament favourites when they beat DStv Namibia 46-42 in an action-packed final to conclude the inaugural Windhoek Draught Franchise 10-a-side rugby tournament yesterday.
The two sides, number one and two on the log after the opening weekend, met on Saturday in a clash won 54-47 by the Windhoek Draught team, which advanced them straight into yesterday’s final.
Meanwhile, DStv Namibia, led by Grootfontein hooker Wikus Jacobs, overcame U-Com Mobile in another tough eliminator 32-17 to book their place in the final.
Windhoek Draught led 17-15 at half-time and ended up scoring tries by centres Danco Burger and Dylan Izaaks (two), wing Dumarcho Hartung and flank Rowan Jansen.
The champions survived three of their players being yellow-carded for two minutes each, namely prop Filipus Tshuuya and wing Hartung in the first half and captain Theron in the final seconds.
Try-scorers
DStv Namibia’s try-scorers were lock Conwill Draghoender (two), wing Keanan Basson, lock Tiaan Martensen and hooker Wikus Jacobs, with the runners-up just running out of time in the scorching heat.
Individual awards were handed over to Jacobs as player of the tournament, as well as to the hardworking U-Com Mobile loose forwards Oderich Mouton (best forward of the tournament) and Tjingairivi Katjivi (best bump of a defender).
Gravity Force speedy wing Shareave Titus was named the best backline player of the series.
