Third defeat in a row for Warriors

Namibia’s Brave Warriors endured a disappointing 1-0 loss to Zimbabwe in their AFCON 2025 Group J qualifier behind closed doors at Orlando Stadium in Soweto yesterday, marking their third consecutive defeat in the group and leaving them rooted at the bottom of the table with zero points.

The result also represents their fourth loss in a row across all competitions.

The defeat is particularly significant as it marks Namibia’s first loss to Zimbabwe in 16 years, breaking a seven-match unbeaten streak that stretched back to 2008.

The decisive goal came courtesy of former Kaizer Chiefs striker Khama Billiat, who converted a penalty after Brave Warriors defender Kennedy Amutenya was adjudged to have fouled Jordan Zamura inside the penalty area.

Despite dominating possession with 57% and having 13 attempts at goal – five of which were on target – Namibia could not find the back of the net. Peter Shalulile came close in the 85th minute, but his header, assisted by Riaan Hanamub’s cross from a corner, sailed just wide of the post.

Namibia’s frustrations were compounded by two yellow cards, with Ngero Katua booked for a foul in the 24th minute and Erastus Kulula receiving a yellow in the 86th minute for a reckless challenge.

Head coach Collin Benjamin expressed disappointment with the result, but remained hopeful for a turnaround in Monday’s return fixture at the same venue.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow, especially considering the effort and chances we created. But we need to keep our heads up and focus on the next game,” he said.

The loss leaves the Brave Warriors at the bottom of Group J, with Zimbabwe leapfrogging them to claim their first victory of the campaign.

Namibia will have an opportunity to seek redemption and put an end to their dismal run when they face Zimbabwe again on Monday at Orlando Stadium. Both teams are set to play the remainder of their AFCON qualifiers in South Africa due to ongoing stadium issues in their respective home countries.

With Namibia’s qualification hopes hanging by a thread, all eyes will be on coach Benjamin’s squad to see if they can turn their fortunes around and revive their AFCON dreams.
