The legacy of Quinton-Steele Botes lives on

Athletes are invited to join the Crystal Gold Quinton-Steele Botes (QSB) Athletics Training Clinic, from 7 to 10 January at the Independence stadium in Windhoek.
The camp, which celebrated its 31st edition in January 2024, unearthed many talented athletes and attracted about 3000 young athletes who received specialised coaching from top coaches. Quinton-Steele Botes (30 April 1960 – 23 June 2014), a prominent Namibian athletics coach and sports administrator, renowned for his significant contributions to athletics in Namibia, established the Athletics Coaching and Training Camp in 1993. The initiative grew into a successful and enduring sports course and after Botes passed away, Leoni van Rensburg and Chantelle van den Berg took the clinic to the next level.
This year's edition accommodates professional coaches from SA, Germany and the Netherlands. It is designed to hone the skills, build strength, and improve the performance of participating athletes by allowing them to train like champions. “The lineup features Ryan Williams, a QSB Training Clinic coach for more than five years and three time bronze medalist who trained for many years with coach Perre Blignout. He is passionate about promoting any sport and mentoring aspiring athletes, leveraging extensive experience in completion and coaching,” highlighted Van Rensburg.
Other coaches includes Hans-Peter Thumm from Germany, traveled over the world and visited Namibia in the early 1990's to establish coaching structures. Greta Koen an Olympians coach from the Netherlands. Marcus Pingpank hails from Germany and specialises in long distance running. Charley Strohmenger will handle the coaches training course for coaches. Jonathan Greyvenstein is a sports motivational speaker and Markus Pring specializes in Talent Identification.
Jonathan Greyvenstein who specialises in High Jump, Morne van As (Javelin), Ryan Williams (Discus and Shot Put), Nadine van der Merwe (Hammer Throw), Charles Strohmenger and F C Pieters (Hurdles), Henk Botha (Sprints), Chantelle van den Berg (Kids Athletics), Louis Ninaber (Pole Vault) and Matt Isaacs (middle and long distance running), will also bring their expertise to the training camp.
The clinic will thus offer cutting-edge techniques in speed, endurance, agility, and strength training. “Whether you’re an aspiring athlete looking to build a solid foundation or an elite athlete aiming to fine-tune your performance and elevate your game, the tailored sessions cater to every level of expertise including teachers, parents and coaches seeking to expand their knowledge,” Van Rensburg emphasised. Participating athletes will benefit from one-on-one feedback sessions from professional trainers. They will participate in sessions focusing on running mechanics, strength conditioning, and injury prevention. Personalized coaching sessions will include skill-building drills, interactive workshops. Athletes will also learn about nutrition, mental toughness and goal setting.
“We will also have a Hammer Throw coach and a pole vault vault coach for the first time in many years. We therefore invite interested athletes to come and get experience because we need Pole Vault and Hammer Throw athletes. There is an opportunity for those athletes to represent Namibia,” concluded van Rensburg.
