The sports ministry yesterday announced the third edition of the Spar Namibia Women’s Race, scheduled for 29 March in Windhoek. Online registration is available on the Spar Group’s website (www.spa.run), with entries open until 9 March.

The race also offers participants the opportunity to join from any Spar store nationwide. In Windhoek, the starting line will be at Pioneerspark’s Wanderers Sports Field.

Race director and regional sports officer Bethold Karumendu confirmed that all logistics are in place. “The race is on, and everything is well organised. Unfortunately, there is no manual registration - everything will be done online,” he said.

“We need girl-children and women”

Karumendu urged the country’s girl-child and women to sign up, emphasising that the event is part of a campaign against gender-based violence, with all registration fees donated to charity.

“We are looking forward to a bigger turnout this year. We need the full support of the sports ministry and regional sports organisations to encourage participation. If we had over 1 000 participants last year, we can easily double that to 3 000 or even reach 5 000 this year,” he said.

Open to all women nationwide

Speaking at the launch, Spar Group Namibia’s regional manager, Eugene van Wyngaard, described last year’s race as the most successful in the series so far.

“We had incredible support from the sports ministry and a great turnout in Windhoek. Even more runners participated across the country,” he said.

Van Wyngaard explained that for those unable to attend in Windhoek, a virtual option is available, allowing participants to run in any town where there is a Spar store.

“Ladies should get involved and run in solidarity for the women of Namibia. All funds raised will be donated to support women and children in need,” he said.

Prize money

Van Wyngaard hinted at incentives for participants. “Sport wouldn’t be sport without prize money, so check the website. I won’t give it all away. Go online and see for yourself,” he said.

He also welcomed male participants but clarified that prize money would be reserved for women. “Gentlemen who want to join are welcome, but we encourage you to dress up by wearing a skirt or a wig to show solidarity for the ladies,” he said.
