Rowles stars in big win for U19 Proteas

Left-arm spinner Jason Rowles was named player of the match as the touring South Africa Under-19 team stormed to a 10-wicket win over the Cricket Namibia junior eleven at the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground yesterday.Rowles, who only turned 17 two weeks ago, took five wickets for just eight runs in six overs, with three maidens. His unplayable spell – conceding only 1.33 per over – contributed in a major way to the Namibian selection crashing from 49/1 after 13.5 overs to 95 all out in 28 overs.Opening batsman Zacheo van Vuuren (WHS Old Boys) was the only Namibian who managed some form of resistance, accumulating 41 runs off 61 balls, with two fours and two sixes.Van Vuuren lost his first partner Michael Müller (Trustco United) for 0 from 6 balls, followed by Morkel Malan (WHS Old Boys) whose 10 off 29 balls (one four) was the only other double-digit contribution.The South African bowling attack conceded 24 extras (18 wides) that saved the Namibians from an even less competitive total.In their reply, South Africa’s openers raced to an unbeaten partnership of 96 runs in 11.5 overs. Adnaan Lagadien (65 not out off 47 balls) hit nine fours and a six, playing the more aggressive role compared to his partner Jorich van Schalkwyk (23 off 25 balls, 3x4).The two sides will play their second 50-over tour match at the same venue on Wednesday morning followed by the third and final encounter on Friday at the adjacent FNB Namibia HP Oval. Both venues will be utilised when Namibia co-hosts the ICC Under 19 World Cup next year.&bull; The Emerging SA team lost two recent warm-up matches in Pretoria against provincial opposition. In February, KZN-Inland (311/7) restricted them to 272/9 to win by 39 runs. In mid March, the Emerging SA team (125/7) failed to chase down Easterns’ 231 all out in a rain-shortened match which they lost by 60 runs on the DLS method.
