Ndahangwapo, Moongo reign as Independence Blitz champions

Namibia Chess Federation’s Bank Windhoek Independence Blitz, held at Nictus Cultural Centre on Saturday, saw the country’s two-time and reigning champion Heskiel Ndahangwapo claim the open section title, alongside chess prodigy Kaino Moongo.The FIDE-rated 11-round Swiss system competition saw 50 players test their strategic skills in pursuit of top honours. Initially set for the weekend before last in Rehoboth, the event was postponed and relocated to Windhoek due to adverse weather conditions.Second place went to McLean Handjaba, while Mitchell Davids secured third.In the women's section, Kaino Moongo reigned supreme ahead of second-placed Anna Moongo and Eufrasia Pakondjelwa in third.The junior category saw Stefan Becker clinch the overall title, with Frederick Cronje and Dawid du Toit securing second and third place, respectively.In the cadets section, Christiaan Cronje secured the overall title, besting runner-up Daniel du Toit and second runner-up Qihao Hong.Speaking to Sport Wrap, the competition’s chief arbiter, Lazarus Shatipamba, said: “This is essentially an annual speed chess tournament that we host to celebrate our country’s Independence Day. This year’s edition was a success with a good turnout, although we plan to go bigger next year.”- mariud@nsh.com.na
