MTC Derby set for Okahandja Turf Club

It’s all systems go for yet another exciting horse racing event at the Garden Town of Okahandja this coming weekend as some of the country’s finest horses battle for top prizes and bragging rights for the event worth N$300 000.
The MTC horse racing derby will take place this Saturday at the famous Okahandja Turf Club which has seen dramatic outcomes in recent years.
One of the event organisers, Eamon Freygang, is optimistic that the competition will produce thrills and spills as many horse racing lovers are expected to flock the town to watch the first major event of the year.
“I can say that a number of horse owners have registered for one of the biggest competitions in the country and we can certainly expect fireworks in this one.
“Some of the top rivals will bring their A game to this one and I am confident that the weather will probably even make it an more special occasion.
“We are inviting all enthusiasts to come in numbers, because this will be a fantastic event filled with high adrenalin and drama,” Freygang said.
In the past, horses like Starlile, French Leave and Visigoth have dominated the main race which is usually held at the conclusion of the competition.
Results in the past couple of events have however changed as emerging horses from different horse racing stables have gained ground on the regular champions.
It is for this reason that organisers believe that the event could bring in new surprise results, given the emerging fast horses that have come of age.
The first race of the year poses the element of as competitors get their first opportunity to assess their rivals for this year.
There will be about 21 races on the day with local and imported horses racing over different distances and divisions.
The entrance fee for adults will be N$50, while children pay N$20. Those entering with vehicles will fork out an extra N$10.
