Moyo, Brown set pace at blitz tourney

A total of 85 chess players clashed over the boards at the FIDE-rated event.
The Coastal Chess Association hosted the Karin Maletzky Independence Blitz tournament which saw Dion Moyo and Annalese Brown dominate the open and women’s sections.
Held at Walvis Bay Private School, the FIDE-rated event had a turnout of 85 players battling it out for much-needed rating points.
According to tournament director Israel Shilongo, the top five players were awarded medals and prize money from the N$5 000 prize fund sponsored by Maletzky. “She is a Swakopmund-based parent who is giving back to the community,” Shilongo said.
Moyo triumphed in the open section ahead of second-placed Timothy Kawani, third-placed Ivan Booi, Finos Gwanyanya (fourth) and Israel Shilongo (fifth).
In the women’s section, Brown took the top of the podium ahead of the sisters Angelique Brown (second) and Amelia Brown (fourth). Selma Kayawala clinched third place, with Shelly Uiras settling for fifth place.
Anthony Yesuf reigned supreme in the junior section, ahead of Hosea Shinana (second), God-Will Hamata (third), Elvis Peter (fourth) and Xavier Amutenya in fifth place.
In the cadet section, Hanro Henderson claimed the overall title, while Gerhardus Johannes Visser took second place. Brave Uusiku secured third place, ahead of Ethan Innes (fourth) and Alijah Hartzenberg (fifth).
