Martin and Dippenaar kings of the dust

The Shell V-Power Swakopmund Rally, which took place over eleven special stages and 110 kilometres, was won on Saturday by Allan Martin in the S4 passenger class and Jandré Dippenaar in the off-road division for pick-ups.

In the passenger section, Wilro Dippenaar and Carolyn Swan came second overall in a 4x4-Ford Fiesta S2000, while Etienne van den Heever and Willy van Wyk grabbed the third position in an S1-class 2x4, Volkswagen Polo. Van den Heever also came first in the S1 class.

In the off-road division, Dippenaar and Gielie Visser's roaring CR2-class 4x4 Ford Ranger V8, with one hour, one minute and 59 seconds on the stopwatch, was too fast for Ewald and Hein Bisschoff's CR1-class 2x4-Nissan Hardbody V8, which came second in 1:10:03.

The Island Boys, with Dirk Redman behind the wheel of the CR2 class 4x4 Toyota Hilux 2.7, and navigator Flippie Liebenberg, took third place with 1:11:54.

Martin and his co-driver, Maretha Olivier, covered the rally with their S4 class 4x4 Skoda Fabia R5 in 53 minutes 47 seconds at an average of 115.80 kilometres per hour and won seven of the eleven stages.

Dippenaar maintained an average of 111.92 km/h, winning three stages and sharing one with Martin in the same time (4:02).

Van den Heever raced without brakes in stages five and six, but still managed to complete the 110 km in 1:07:08 at an average of 93.35 km/h.



Results per class:

S4: 1 Martin/Olivier (53:47), 2 W. Dippenaar/Swan (55:57). Oswaldo Mendes/Cecil Koorts with a 4x4-Subaru Impreza (SS1) and Issai Nhinda/Dian van der Merwe in a 4x4-Subaru Impreza (SS10) did not finish. Tinus Malan and Paul van Niekerk (4x4-Audi TT) have to withdraw after SS5.

S2: 1 Gert Coetzee/Dalton Bezuidenhout (2x4-VW Polo A7) 1:07:30, 2 Jannie Coetzee/George Coetzee (2x4-VW Polo Gold) 1:40:36. Wido Bartsch/Raymond Fourie as well as Zachary Martin/Amanda Hugo's 2x4-VW Polos broke in SS2 and SS4 respectively and could not complete the rally.

S1: 1 Van den Heever/Van Wyk 1:07:08, 2 Paul Oosthuizen/Johan du Plessis (1:09:30) 2x4-VW Golf MK2, 3 Pierre Röhm/Berto Mostert (1:13:46) 2x4-VW Polo, 4 Pieter Greeff/JP Robinson (1:08:01) 2x4-Toyota Corolla. Steven Marnevick/Rouche Louw's 2x4-Mitsubishi Lancer develops problems in SS2 and has to withdraw.

CR1: 1 E. Bisschoff/H. Bischoff. Withdrawals: Willie Schoeman/SJ Schoeman (SS7) 2x4-Toyota Hilux 2.8, Werner Bartsch/Christel Fourie (SS9) 2x4-Ford Courier V6, Peter-Alan Alchin/Riaan Hennop (SS5) 2x4-Ford Courier V6.
