Kudos beat Unam Queens
'We really need more people to sponsor the league'
Volleyball continues to struggle without sponsorship, but has made great strides.
This weekend, the Central Volleyball Association (CVA) held its first league round one games, which started last Wednesday with 11 men's teams and eight ladies' teams.
The league started on 11 March. Nine clubs are affiliated to the CVA and participate in the league.
Unam Queens went up against Kudos on Saturday at the University of Namibia gym hall.
“It was really not a tough game for me. We just did not give enough effort into the game, that’s why we lost, but so far the league is doing fine,” Unam Queens captain Elizabeth Petit said.
“The game was not so difficult as both teams held up their discipline, but overall, the game was played in a good professional manner,” one of the referees added.
“It was quite the roller-coaster but we ended up winning the game. The other team has a strong defence and strong attack, but we still won the game,” one of the Kudos players noted.
The CVA league currently does not have any sponsors on board.
This while CVA has eight associations, and each of those have a league, with the exception of Great Kunene, which mostly just hosts tournaments.
“We really need more people to sponsor the league, especially the indoor venues. We also need an increase in the award money, because the money is too little to cater for transport, accommodation and food when teams travel,” CVA chairperson Dorothy Nambahu said.
The final draw will take place on the 12 August at the Israel Patrick Iyambo Police College. The league will conclude on Saturday, 27 May.
