The Independence Stadium was fired up this weekend as the Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU) hosted the national athletics championship.

With more than 600 athletes competing, it was indeed a blockbuster event with new names coming up the ranks, as new records were set.

According to NSSU sport coordinator Roger Kambatuku, the event is the biggest on the NSSU sports calendar and is considered the Olympics of school gatherings.

The Khomas Region definitely dominated at the athletics as they took home 78 medals - 34 gold, 24 silver and 20 bronze. Erongo took second place with 40 medals - 14 gold, 16 silver and 10 bronze - while Hardap continued to come up the ranks with 37 medals, 13 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze.

Upcoming star Lume Jansen Van Rensburg - who won best junior female, junior track and junior victrix ludorum at the NSSU national athletics last year - surely came ready to compete as she won two gold medals and one silver.

“I’ve been training for months now and the competition was really tight, especially at the 300-metre hurdles. But I’m happy! I really enjoyed myself on the track, but there is still room for improvement," she said after the event.

Kaersten Diergaardt, who represented Khomas, impressed at the under-19 high jump, securing a gold medal after his two-metre jump.

Magano Naseb from //Karas was on fire, taking home three golds in the under-17 400m, 200m and 100m dash. Speaking after winning the 400m, he said: “Hard work really paid off here because I spent a lot of time training, so I’m happy with my performance this year.”
