The Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) League returns today, with the new season’s tip-off at the University of Namibia’s (Unam) gym hall.

Looking back at last season, the men’s premier league title was claimed by Unam Rebels, alongside Unam Phoenix securing the women’s division title.

In the lower divisions, BAS Vikings won the first division championship, alongside NUST Gladiators who were crowned champions in the second division.

The race for second place saw Unam Wolves finishing as runners-up in the men’s premier league. Other beaten finalists were Atlantic Storms (women’s premier league), Unam Penguins (first division) and Afro Stars’ second team (second division).

Tip-off match-ups

Friday’s opening game in the women’s premier league sees the Unam Wildcats take on Legends at 17:00.

This will be followed by a first division match-up between Unam Penguins and Unam Raiders at 19:00, before the night concludes with a Men’s Premier League clash between Afro Stars and Quality Basketball Club at 21:00.

Saturday’s match-ups

Tomorrow’s action starts early, with Second Division fixtures kicking things off. Unam Vipers go up against Unam Pacers at 10:00, followed by Atlantic Thunders facing Unam Knights at 11:30.

The final second division match of the day tips off at 13:00, featuring Osona Braves against Leopards Basketball Club.

At 15:00, some of the league’s top talents will showcase their skills in the All-Star events, which include a shooting, slam dunk and three-point contest.

The All-Star match-ups begin with Team Shox taking on Team Parker, followed by a wheelchair basketball match-up between KBA Select Wheelchair Basketball Kings and Wheel Ability Basketball Club at 17:00.

The final game of the day sees Team World take on Team Namibia at 18:00.

Sunday’s fixtures

Sunday will feature women’s premier league action, starting with NUST Dodgers facing Unam Phoenix at 11:00.

At 12:30, Ongos Shooting Stars go head-to-head with BAS Falcons, before Atlantic Storms take on Legends at 14:00 in the final premier league showdown of the weekend.

The weekend wraps up with two first division games. NUST Gladiators will battle Unam Cadets at 16:00, followed by Afro Stars’ second team taking on Plaza Warriors.

Promotions

Speaking to Sport Wrap, head of KBA officials Marttinellie Vries explained the recent promotions, confirming BAS Vikings’ promotion to the premier league after winning the first division last season.

“With Bas Vikings’ departure, the first division was left with six teams. To fill the gap, the NUST Gladiators earned an automatic promotion after emerging as champions of the second division,” she said.

Additionally, Vries said Afro Stars’ second team was granted a spot in the first division after Leopards chose to forfeit their match to compete for promotion. “This left Lions Basketball Club and Team Allies as the final contenders for the last available first division spot.

“Their decisive match took place on Wednesday night at Unam Gym, where Lions Basketball Club clinched a close 84-79 victory, securing its place in the first division for the upcoming season. As a result, Team Allies will remain in the second division,” she noted.
