Gravel and Dirt: Mans, Krugel victorious at Otjiwa
Namibians Gerhard Mans and Anri Krugel won the Hollard Gravel and Dirt races at Otjiwa Safari Lodge over the weekend.
The cyclists pushed against a strong wind to come first in the men’s and women's 80-kilometre categories.
It was a repeat for Mans who also won the event at Otjiwa last year.
"I am extremely proud of the victory. It was very difficult against the wind, but me and my friend Ingram Cuff broke away and managed first and second place.
"I dedicate this win to all the mothers out there," Mans said.
He was followed by Hollard-sponsored Cuff, who took second place, while Gerhard Breed made it to the finish line in third.
Powered through
In the women’s division, Krugel powered to a fantastic victory as she also battled against the wind.
"It was not really easy because the wind proved to be a bit tough today. However, I pushed on and managed to get the victory," she said, also dedicating her victory to mothers, with Mother's Day celebrated yesterday.
Monique Du Plessis and Jana-Marie Mostert came in second and third respectively.
The two cyclists gave a good chase but Krugel proved to have the legs.
Ecstatic
Meanwhile, Roger Suren won the 40km male category race while Delsia Janse van Vuuren scooped the women’s category.
"All I can say is that the wind was not forgiving today, but I pushed and managed to win. I am happy about the result and will just build on it," Suren said.
Janse van Vuuren was also ecstatic about her victory.
"I am proud of myself for this one and the girls who were behind me. It was a good race, even if the wind was a bit tough on us."
