Going strong at 41
Johannes delivers stellar performance in Durban
At 41, Helalia Johannes continues to prove that age is just a number, after another top performance at the Spar 10 km Marathon in Durban, which saw her finishing second overall in a race filled with young and energetic athletes.
Namibia’s queen of the marathon, Helalia Johannes finished first in category 1/38 and second overall at the Durban Spar Women’s 10km Marathon in a time of 0:31:59 yesterday.
Ethiopian superstar Tadu Nare, who clocked 0:31:50, was the overall winner during a race that Johannes was keen on winning.
Nare’s compatriot Selam Gebre completed the race in third spot, clocking 0:32:17 in challenging weather conditions.
The on-track rivalry between Nare and Johannes has become more interesting after Johannes won the opening race last month in Gqeberha.
“I was not feeling well and it was just not my day because I woke up on Saturday morning and I missed my flight in Namibia and so I had to stay at the airport for three hours.
“When I arrived in Johannesburg, I stayed at the airport for five more hours and once again I missed my flight to Durban.
“I only arrived in Durban on Saturday night and did not have enough rest,” Johannes said.
