The ROCK & RUT Mountain Bike Club’s race this weekend north of the capital promise to once again be a top notch endeavour.
A talented mountain bike (MTB) rider from the Western Cape, South Africa, will join the Namibians this weekend at the Midgard Country Estate for the First National Bank Otjihavera MTB Experience.
Sion Liebenberg (11 years) from Namibia will team up with his buddy Connor Roebuck (12) from Team Mrace Rascals in the Paarl. The duo will square up as a team against local talent for the nineteenth edition of the race.
Mrace Coaching Systems is a cycling academy in the Paarl which coaches riders from four years and older. The sole purpose of the academy is to find and develop talented riders for the future.
Nabil Robiati from the ROCK & RUT Mountain Bike Club committee elaborates: “Otjihavera has been on the calendar for 19 years now. This is our 19th edition so we are going for the big one next year.
“The race is one heck of an experience. It is the only multi stage mountain bike race in Namibia. The competition kicks off today with a prologue with stages tomorrow and Sunday.
“The team event was always a success with riders from all age categories tackling the local jeep and single tracks. Teams normally enter with a cool name. My team is called Two Tired. We just want to make sure that we do not create any expectations.
“The surrounds are really very beautiful. There is a teams that we call the Wrestling Snakes. They are the ones going flat out for the podium and then you get the leisure-like riders who challenge themselves.
“There are medals for the riders and prizes they can win. We always like to create a nice festive vibe with music to entertain the competitors and their family and friends.
“The ROCK & RUT Mountain Bike Club was established to promote and grow mountain biking in Namibia. We have developed several riders over the years.”
