Full team lists for Africa Games released

Namibia is sending a team of 78 representatives to the 13th Africa Games which starts in Ghana on Friday 8 March until 23 March. Venues at three cities in the host nation will be used, namely Kumasi, Cape Coast and the capital Accra.

Namibians will compete in seven sports codes, with Athletics Namibia having the biggest portion of 25 athletes, along with a combined 30 players in the national men’s and women’s cricket squads – the Richelieu Eagles and the Capricorn Eagles.

The travelling groups also includes three wrestlers, eight cyclists, eight swimmers, two chess players and two representatives in karate – accompanied by coaches, managers, medical staff and dignitaries.

With many athletes still actively in competition locally and internationally, their public send-off held on Saturday morning at the Wernhil shopping centre was not nearly in full attendance, but contained a message of encouragement from the minister of sport, Agnes Tjongarero.

The travelling dignitaries will include Tjongarero and her ministry’s executive director Mbumba Haitengela; director of sport Jo-Ann Manuel; the Namibia Sports Commission’s chief administrator Freddy Mwiya and the Namibian National Olympic Committee’s president Abner Xoagub.
