The thrill of competition and challenge filled the air as the 2024 FNB Schools Mountain Bike League resumed last Saturday at the IJG Trails on the southern outskirts of Windhoek.

With participants from over 10 schools, the event promised a day of exhilarating races and impressive performances. It was the first of five to be held in Windhoek, after the opener at Stampriet on 9 March.

Carolin Janik, a member of the league’s organising committee, expressed delight at the turnout.

“We had a fantastic showing from schools across the region,” Janik remarked, emphasizing the widespread participation.

In a display of outstanding athleticism, Delsia Janse van Vuuren from Windhoek Gymnasium secured first place in the girls under-18 category. Completing five laps at an impressive pace, Van Vuuren’s achievement showcased her dedication and skill. Not far behind was her teammate, Kylie Dickerson, who claimed second place with a commendable time of 1 minute.

In the boys under-18 division, Roger Surén of Windhoek Gymnasium emerged victorious. Close on his back wheel was Prince Sibomang from the Physically Active Youth Club behind.

Coach Wilmien Chamberlain of the MTB Life club, powered by Cycletec expressed immense pride in her team’s performance.

“All 34 of our athletes competed today, and every one of them exceeded my expectations,” Chamberlain stated, highlighting the dedication and effort displayed by her athletes.

Among the competitors was Erika van Rhyn, representing Pionierspark Primary School in the under-14 category and competing in the FNB Schools Mountain Bike League for the first time.

Van Rhyn showcased her potential with a fourth-place finish. “This is definitely something I will compete in again,” she affirmed, expressing her enthusiasm for the sport.

As the day drew to a close, anticipation mounted for the upcoming events in the league. This season of the FNB Schools Mountain Bike League is set to conclude with the finals scheduled for 17 August 2024.

The next competition is slated for 1 June, followed by events on 20 July 20 and 3 August. Participants eagerly anticipate further opportunities to showcase their talent and determination on the trails and winning points for their schools in the process.
