The Richelieu Eagles on Saturday afternoon stormed to their third consecutive victory in the African T20 qualifier for next year’s T20 World Cup. Namibia beat Rwanda by 68 runs on the Duckworth Lewis Stern method.

The Namibians batted first at Wanderers and compiled their highest total so far – 207 for the loss of 3 wickets in 20 overs.

On-form opener Niko Davin blasted 80 runs off just 59 balls, while number four Jan Frylinck kept the Eagles’ score advancing with 45 not out off 28 balls (1x4 3x6).

JJ Smit came in at number five and smashed 30 not out from 10 balls (3x4 2x6), after earlier innings by Michael van Lingen (24 off 15 balls, 4x4) and Gerhard Erasmus (16 of 10 balls, 1x4 1x6).

During the Namibian innings 17 fours and eight sixes were sent to the boundary.

Bernard Scholtz, Gerhard Erasmus, Jan Frylinck and Ben Shikongo then took one wicket each.

Rwanda had lost 5 wickets for 46 runs in 10 overs when rain interrupted play. Rwanda would have needed 162 more runs in 10 overs, but lost the game by 68 runs according to the DLS formula.

For the visitors, Martin Akayezu, Clinton Rubagumya and Emile Rukiriza each claimed one Namibian wicket.

The Namibians are well on their way to win the series with three wins from 3 matches versus Kenia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. They kicked off the series last Wednesday by sensationally overpowering Zimbabwe by seven wickets at Wanderers. They also handed Uganda a six-wicket defeat on Friday.

The Eagles certainly seem unstoppably on course to qualifying for next year’s T20 World Cup to be be held in the USA and West Indies.

Niko Davin is Namibia’s current top scorer with 191 runs in three innings. Michael van Lingen contributed 77 (in 3), Jan Frylinck 75 (in 2), Gerhard Erasmus 51 (in 2) and JJ Smit 30 not out (in 1).

Namibia’s wicket-takers so far in the tournament are David Wiese 4/17 in 3.4 overs, Tangeni Lungameni 4/37 in 7, JJ Smit 4/41 in 8, Gerhard Erasmus 4/46 in 9, Bernard Scholtz 3/57 in 12, Jan Frylinck 1/4 in 1, Ben Shikongo 1/11 in 1.

The Eagles will face Kenya in the afternoon match today at Wanderers. The hosts will face Tanzania tomorrow, before their final clash on Thursday against Nigeria.
