CVA League nears finale after Sunday showdowns

Teams fought to keep their campaigns alive ahead of Saturday's final showdown.
Central Volleyball Association (CVA) Beach Volleyball League’s latest Round Robin clashes took place last Sunday at A. Shipena Secondary School in Windhoek, marking the second-last weekend of the competition.
With the grand finale set for this Saturday, teams gave their all in back-to-back matches, aiming to secure strong standings in both the Men’s and Women’s Open divisions.
In the Women’s Open, all-time log leaders Cathrine Thomas and Tuli Amakali continued their dominant run with a 2-1 victory over Rauna Shitalangaho and Albertina Matheus, followed by a comfortable 2-0 win against Helena Shingulu and Ikiuyu Victoria.
Meanwhile, Lavinia Hangula and Alushe Sakeus also proved to be one of the dominant duos of the day, overcoming Veronica Sampapi and Emilia Shinendima 2-1, before securing back-to-back straight-set victories against Lea Nangobe and Angel Ouxurus as well as Shingulu and Victoria.
Shitalangaho and Matheus bounced back from their earlier defeat with a 2-0 victory over Dorthy Nambahu and Maria Iileka.
Speaking to this publication, all-time Women’s Open log leaders Thomas and Amakali acknowledged that their seniority gave them an advantage over their competitors.
“Competition wasn’t really tough for us because we are more experienced,” Amakali said.
Despite their dominance, Thomas admitted that beach volleyball is not their primary focus. “We initially signed up to maintain our fitness for the MTC Volleyball National League (VNL) later this year. But since we had paid, we didn’t want to lose either,” she added humorously.
“We’re more used to indoor volleyball, and we took part in beach volleyball to learn a few things that could benefit us in the VNL. You can always pick up small techniques to transfer to the indoor game,” they said.
Men’s Open results
The Men’s Open category saw Matheus Mupupa and Sakeus Shaningi defeat Phillips Naboth and Immanuel Leopold 2-1 in their first match. Mupupa and Shaningi later suffered a 2-0 loss to Joseph Shinyengu and Laban Festus.
Shinyengu and Festus have also recorded two more victories, including a 2-1 triumph over Willem Shikongo and Festus Shatiwa and a 2-0 win against Henry Sibeso and Tumeritino Lebereki.
Tomas Shilumbu and Matheus Nahenda also delivered a dominant performance, securing a 2-0 victory over Abiatar Andreas and Teofelius Ndefenongo.
Aloisius Ishitile and Tobias Johannes had mixed results, first cruising past Shinyengu and Festus 2-0 but later falling in a close 2-1 battle against Naboth and Leopold.
In another action of the day, all-time log leaders Simeon Ndaxula and Teodor Thomas dispatched Naboth and Leopold 2-0, while Immanuel Hafenye and Daniel Weyulu secured a straight-set win over Sibeso and Lebereki.
Reflecting on their achievement, all-time log leaders Ndaxula and Thomas expressed delight but remained humble, attributing their success to the relentless effort they put in throughout the competition.
“We wouldn’t say we are the best, but we have given our absolute best from the first game to the most recent one. Our consistency comes from staying focused on the fundamentals and maintaining a positive mindset, no matter the challenge. This approach has helped us win, even against strong opponents like Messah Kambala and Tomas Shivute,” they said.
Looking ahead to their final matches on Saturday, they added: “We are preparing thoroughly to ensure that we don’t lose a single game in the competition. It’s not only a great record but also a strong statement about our abilities.”
