Buchert’s last-second surge seals victory at Seawork Cares Beach Series Opener

JÖRN Buchert delivered a last-second come-from-behind victory at the Team Flippy Seawork Cares Beach Series 2025 opener at Swakopmund’s Mole on Saturday.As the 2km swim reached its final moments, frontrunner Duncan looked set to claim the win—until Buchert unleashed a sprint up the beach, overtaking him in the last seconds to snatch victory.Over 70 competitors took on open-water swims and coastal runs in the perfect weather and sea conditions.The 2km swim saw Buchert dig deep in the final stretch, capitalising on a last chance to edge past Duncan at the finish. “I just kept pushing, and in the end, it paid off,” he said, crediting the calm waters and warm conditions for helping him maintain pace.In the 1km race, Paul Archer secured victory, battling through the final lap after losing touch with the early leader. “I gave everything I had in that last stretch,” he admitted.The 500m swim saw a dominant performance from Tamirin Coetzee, who led out of the water. Despite an early moment of disorientation, she maintained the win.The running events also brought excitement, with competitors pushing across the 5km and 2km courses.In the 5km male senior division, Jonathan Grebe set the pace early, clinching first place. Among the male masters, Sebastian Werder led, finishing first.The female senior division saw Lahja Imalwa dominate the field, securing first place, while in the female masters, Anja Schroder crossed the finish line first.In the 2km run, Oliver Pieters stormed to victory.Organiser and Team Flippy founder Phillip Seidler hailed the event as a success, noting the diverse range of participants—from young athletes to seniors in their 60s and 70s—who took part in swims and runs ranging from 500m to 5km. "It was an amazing day, and seeing the energy, excitement, and determination from the participants was incredible,” Seidler said.While this first event was kept low-key out of respect for the recent passing of Founding President Sam Nujoma, the next event on March 15 promises an even bigger experience, with live music, food stalls, and a growing number of competitors. The Seawork Cares Beach Series will continue through April and May, with a points-based system rewarding both top finishers and all participants who complete races.
