The Afrocat Lions team on Saturday secured the overall title in the inaugural 4-a-side mixed pro category at the annual FNB Insurance DTS Volleyball For All tournament, held at Olympia’s DTS Sports Field in Windhoek.

The champions walked away with N$10 000 in prize money and gold medals.

With a total of 24 teams competing in the 4-a-side category, Active Performer finished as runners-up, claiming N$7 500, followed by third-placed FNBIB Dynamite (N$5 000) and fourth-placed City of Windhoek A (N$3 000).

Speaking to Sport Wrap, Afrocat Lions team captain Simeon Ndaxula credited their rigorous preparation for their success.

“We trained a lot for this tournament because we anticipated tough competition. However, only a few teams really challenged us, including Active Performer, who finished second,” he said.

Ndaxula explained that their strategic approach played a key role in their triumph. “One of our tactics was having the server remain in position instead of rotating forward to attack after serving.

“When the ball was returned, we would transition back into defence. Another strategy involved utilising the women on our team primarily for serving and passing while maintaining their positions. We felt confident in our approach and believed we could secure the win,” he said.

Reflecting on the victory, Ndaxula expressed pride in leading his team to success. “I feel superb to have captained my team to victory. We are highly motivated right now and excited about upcoming tournaments we can compete in,” he said.

Six-a-side winners

The traditional 6-a-side category saw the top three teams rewarded with goodie bags from FNB Insurance. Sky Hunters emerged victorious, securing gold medals, while Iron Wings claimed silver and Rent-a-Drum Sache A took home bronze.

During the fun and special prizes segment, DTS Sports Club made a generous donation of N$15 000 to Afrocat Sports Club to support court improvements.

Blind Side Blockers received the best-dressed team award, earning a Maerua Superspar hamper; Windhoek International School was recognised as the best-organized team, receiving volleyballs from OTB Sport; Team Hollard Life won the best team spirit award, along with hampers from Hakahana; and V5 Digital was named the friendliest team, earning hampers from African Marketing.

Announcers Gunnar von Dewitz and Axel Dainot, who kept the crowd engaged throughout, were honoured with special awards for their contributions.

In a press release issued yesterday, tournament director Heiko Kesselmann expressed gratitude on behalf of DTS Sports Club to all sponsors and supporters who ensured the event’s success.
