1 600 NDF officers in Swakop for sports games
About 1 600 Namibian Defence Force (NDF) officers from across the country are in Swakopmund for a week-long seventh annual NDF sports games.
The competition includes several sports codes such as football, netball, volleyball, chess, pool, boxing and a triathlon.
The competition was officially opened by Namibian army commander, Major General Matheus Alueendo, who celebrated the occasion after two difficult years of isolation and limitations on sports due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are finally together again. This is a clear demonstration of the unifying power of sports,” he said.
Network and unite
NDF commander Ian Haikela said while the event was a competition in which cash prizes, trophies and medals can be won, it was more so an opportunity for defence force's various units and divisions to network and unite.
“Besides this, sports is also good for the soldiers' physical and mental health.”
The navy is the host of this year’s event, while the Defence Force Foundation is the main sponsor. Other units participating include the air force, the army and special forces, amongst others.
“There are different champions for the different sports codes and there is an overall winner. We’ just have to wait and see what happens. We are looking forward to an exciting week ahead,” Haikela said.
He invited to the public to attend and support the men and women in uniform. The games end on Thursday.
