Women may need 300 years to equal men - UN

Jemima Beukes
The United Nations (UN) has issued a grim warning that, at the current rate of progress, it could take another 300 years for women and girls worldwide to achieve the same rights and protections as men.

This alarming projection was made public by UN Women over the weekend through social media platforms, emphasizing that despite being on the brink of 2025, no country has yet fully attained gender equality.

According to the UN Women's statement: “It’s 2025 and no country has yet achieved gender equality. At the current rate of progress, it could take another 300 years for women and girls to have the same rights and protections as men. But it doesn’t have to be this way.” The organization calls on individuals to engage in meaningful conversations, understand their rights, and share caregiving responsibilities as steps toward achieving gender equality.

The Global Gender Gap Report 2024, released by the World Economic Forum (WEF), provides a sobering analysis of the current state of gender equality. The report reveals that the global gender gap score stands at 68.5% closed across 146 countries analyzed. While some progress has been made, significant disparities remain in various sectors.

According to the Global Gender Gap Index, women continue to face significant barriers in terms of economic participation and decision-making, with a persistent gender pay gap and under-representation in leadership positions. - [email protected]
