Repatriated Angolan children back in Namibia
Angolan children who had previously roamed the streets of northern Namibian towns selling wooden handicrafts have returned, nearly seven months after their repatriation to Angola.
In May 2024, 73 minor children and their mothers were repatriated as part of an agreement between the Namibian and Angolan governments. The process was facilitated by Namibia’s Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Lucia Witbooi. Before their repatriation, the group had been temporarily housed at the Ondangwa National Youth Service Centre under the care of the Namibian government.
Recently, Namibian Sun observed the group again in Ondangwa, roaming near the Omwandi Shell Service Station. This has raised questions among locals about how they managed to cross the border back into Namibia. Frustrated residents expressed concerns and suggested that law enforcement authorities should be notified.
The situation highlights ongoing challenges in managing cross-border migration and ensuring the effective implementation of agreements between the two nations.
