Unemployed youth vulnerable to human trafficking
NEWS IN SHORT
The sport, youth and national service ministry has urged the public to remain cautious about human trafficking.
In Namibia, high unemployment, particularly among young people, makes them more vulnerable to human trafficking and exploitation. “Many of them are looking for economic opportunities, hoping to work abroad, and thus become prime targets for traffickers who are desperately seeking workers,” the ministry said in a recent statement.
It is crucial to recognise the signs of human trafficking in order to prevent and report these crimes, the ministry advised, warning of an increasing number of adult men being forced into dangerous working conditions. Furthermore, women and girls are increasingly trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation and as drug couriers. Athletes are also at risk of human trafficking when travelling abroad for training or competitions.
Suspicious incidents should be reported to 106 or 10111.
