Telecom tower ransacked at Rössing Mountain

NEWS IN SHORT

The telecommunications tower at Rössing Mountain near Swakopmund was ransacked earlier this week in what appears to be a targeted attack for metal theft.

The break-in resulted in extensive damage to critical equipment.

Locks were cut and doors forcibly opened in the early hours of the morning, with intruders ripping out electrical wiring, destroying computer hardware and vandalising air conditioning systems. Fuel was syphoned from the generator, power was deliberately switched off, and numerous items are believed to have been stolen – likely for their scrap metal value.

The Namibian police confirmed they are investigating the incident. A pair of gloves believed to have been left behind by one of the perpetrators has been taken in as potential evidence.

The site, which houses infrastructure for multiple telecommunications and broadcasting entities including MTC and NBC, was left severely compromised.
