Lüderitz apartment destroyed in fire

An apartment located above the Pupkewitz Megabuild store in Lüderitz caught fire around 03:00 on Friday. Head of the fire department, David Dennis, said: "We were on the scene quickly and could bring the fire under control before it could spread further."

He said another apartment to the right was undamaged. However, water that flowed from the upper floor caused damage to the store.

Dennis said it is an old building with wooden floors, stairs and ceilings. "There is also an attic, and there is a suspicion that the fire could have started there. People were at home and asleep, but they were unharmed."

Lüderitz's town council currently employs two firefighters, supported by 12 volunteers. "We were all there and fought the fire. Our priorities in a fire are to get it under control and prevent loss of life, and that's what we all did together."
