Most political parties are in the process of launching their manifestos in anticipation of the November elections. Do you think manifestos are still an effective campaign tool and what societal issues would you like parties to focus on in their manifestos?

In today's political landscape, voters are increasingly sceptical of empty promises, so manifestos should outline concrete, actionable plans to have a stronger impact. Moreover, the rise of social media and the 24-hour news cycle has shifted the way these plans are communicated, with voters often demanding more transparency and direct engagement.

Manifestos are important as they outline what political parties plan for Namibians during their tenure. However, they should also detail how they intend to implement these goals. This enables us, the electorate, to hold them accountable when they fail to deliver on their promises, even years later.

I believe manifestos are still an effective way to campaign and communicate what a political party aims to achieve during the period for which they seek a renewal of mandate. Manifestos need to be broken down into thematic areas. Our largest demographic is the youth, so the manifesto should specifically address their needs and aspirations.

If manifestos are not disseminated at the right place and time, they will lose their impact. The majority of voters are under 35 years old – do these manifestos address the struggles faced by this majority in modern Namibia? It is crucial for political parties to ensure that their manifestos resonate with the realities of young people today, such as employment, education and economic opportunities.

Yes, I do believe that manifestos are still an effective way to win support, but that entirely depends on the structure of that manifesto. I believe that as long as they speak to the status quo of the country and the aspirations of that party – the party must have shown that they are ready to fight for the people during their period of existence – [they are effective]. As stated, political parties should focus on the issues affecting the citizens at the time of elections and provide an extensive plan of action.
