Swapo under attack - Nandi-Ndaitwah

Ogone Tlhage
Swapo vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says there is an onslaught against the ruling party that is aimed at reversing the gains the party has made over the years.

Nandi-Ndaitwah made the remarks during a rally held in Omuthiya in the Oshikoto Region over the weekend.

While stressing that Swapo was coming under attack, she said: “We must be mindful that it is no secret that Swapo Party, just like other former liberation movements in southern Africa, is under a persistent, aggressive and calculated onslaught by those whose aim is to reverse the gains of our revolution.”

Shift focus

Nandi-Ndaitwah also appealed to party members to do away with internal groupings, saying that now that the elective congress is over, it is time to focus on the upcoming presidential and national assembly elections in 2024

"It is wrong, counterproductive, anti-revolutionary and unconstitutional in terms of the constitution of the Swapo Party to hold on to the political grouping within the party after the congress. The congress has given us the leadership and we must rally behind that leadership. Let us focus on strengthening our party now,” she urged.

She also expressed concerns over tribalism, warning that it is a worrying trend being used by some individuals to divide the party. She warned that tribalism has destructive potential.

“While trying to develop this country, there are some things that can bring this country down. Tribalism and regionalism, if allowed, will destroy this country and our lives. In the first place, a tribalist person will never have personal peace of mind, a status that can affect their health and overall well-being,” she said.

Work together

While Namibia is a diverse country consisting of different ethnic groups, cultural differences should not in any way divide Namibians, she said.

"It is true that, as a nation, we are made up of different ethnic groups with different cultures and traditions. However, those different cultures and traditions must not be used to divide us but must be our strength."

In order to build a prosperous Namibia, it is necessary to put aside tribalism, she stressed.

“Comrades, if we want to build a Namibia that will bring prosperity to all of us, we must stop to think tribal. In fact, we are giving an opportunity to those who want Namibia’s resources not to serve our people and [who] will take advantage of our tribal tendencies to divide us further with the aim of destroying the Swapo Party and taking over the country through any group they are able to control in order to benefit from our resources,” Nandi-Ndaitwah pointed out.
