The ruling Swapo Party has urged government to make amendments to the several pieces of legislation - in line with recommendations made by the Business Rescue Task Force.

The draft resolutions emanate from the party’s seventh elective congress where a new vice-president, secretary-general and deputy secretary-general were elected last month.

Part of the proposals include implementing recommendations handed over to President Hage Geingob earlier this year.

“Noting that Cabinet approved a Business Rescue Task Force to support affected businesses and the youth, and enhance strategies to access finance, the Swapo Party directs government to implement the recommendations of the task force by amending - among others - the Companies Act, the Insolvency Act, the Public Enterprises Act and the Namibia Competitions Act,” it said.

The party further directed government to enact the Banking Institutions Act and finalise the Consumer Protection Act and the Namibia Business Law, as well as establish a business rescue fund.

Swapo also wants the ‘Growth at Home’ strategy implemented to intensify industrialisation efforts.

“The Swapo Party directs government to accelerate the implementation of the Growth at Home strategy and intensify the buying of products made in Namibia.”

Government was further encouraged to accelerate recommendations by the Harvard Growth Lab.

The party also wants government to design tailor-made support for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) owned by Namibians to enable them to compete with international SMEs, as well as undertake bi-annual reviews of the Tourism Recovery Strategy.
