Nudo youth league aims to nationalise party
The National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) youth league's third congress resolutions were tabled over the weekend in Windhoek, and the party elected leaders that will serve for the next five years.
This is the party's first congress since 2013, and was titled 'quality must prevail over tribe'.
Golden Katjatako was elected as the youth wing's national chairperson, while Haimbanga Olavi Handumbo took the position of deputy national chairperson.
Veparura Kandirikirira was elected as the substantive secretary-general, serving alongside deputy secretary-general Laqueen Christof.
The youth league made no secret that Nudo is an Ovaherero-dominated party, but said it must be nationalised.
Kandirikirira said the party should stop electing people from a certain tribe or parts of Namibia, and must instead diversify its elections.
Since taking up his position six years ago, he has made it his sole aim to detach the party from accusations that it is tribalist.
"The fundamental goal of the Nudo youth league remains to construct a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous society in Namibia.”
Inclusive
Key points listed during the congress were the nationalisation of the party, making it inclusive of all ethnic groups, and for party leaders to practice impartiality at all times.
In a statement, the party said "members of the youth league should always desist themselves from grouping and taking part in any internal infights or traditional disputes. We should be more impartial as leaders".
The youth league further pledged to strive for the maximum unity of purpose and functioning, and said it will respect the linguistic, cultural and religious diversity of its members.
"The Nudo youth league will support the emancipation of women, combat sexism and ensure that the voice of women is fully heard in the organisation and that women are properly represented," the party further promised.
In an interview with Namibian Sun, Kandirikirira said the party has full representation in all 14 regions of the country, and it is in Nudo’s hands to initiate programmes in all 121 constituencies.
"We are going to have our activities more in the Kavango West, Kavango East, Zambezi, Oshana, Ohangwena, Hardap and Oshikoto regions and will continue to capacitate youths in all our regions," he said.
