Nudo presidential hopefuls top parliamentary list
Two of the men who are in the running to become the president of the National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) garnered the most votes at the party’s electoral college, held in Windhoek over the weekend.
Vetaruhe Kandorozu and Peter Kazongomuinja occupy positions one and two respectively on the list, signalling their widespread popularity within the party’s ranks.
The duo were in contention to run for the party presidency at the Nudo congress in July, which ended up being cancelled after a splinter group - led by Barry Rukoro - disrupted proceedings. With the party set to hold its elective congress early next year, Kandorozu and Kazongomuinja are widely expected to be the main candidates in the race to succeed incumbent president Esther Utjiua Muinjangue.
The party is yet to release its full parliamentary list; it only released the top 10 candidates.
The list includes Kandorozu, Kazongominja, Joseph Uaraa Uapingene, Mariana Christof, Olavi Haimbanga, Anna Ntonda, Kaitikirue Hiatjiua, Yvonne Shimantu, Vincent Kahua and Ester Kake.
“Delegates voted for 32 candidates and the remaining 64 will be filled by the party,” Nudo secretary-general Josef Kauandenge told Namibian Sun yesterday.
‘Five years of hell’
This weekend’s electoral college also confirmed that the party is set to have new lawmakers in the National Assembly after Kauandenge and Muinjangue opted not to contest for a spot on the list.
"We have led this party for the past five years, both as members of parliament and leaders. It has not been easy, as it was five years of hell, anarchy and internal turmoil caused by some disgruntled elements within the party, who clearly have become insects busy feasting on the flesh of the party from within,” Kauandenge said.
“Our members should not panic as president [Muinjangue] and myself, together with the entire party leadership, will still continue to be in charge and lead the party through this campaign until next year in May when we will officially hand over these positions to new incoming leaders who will be elected at our congress," he added.
“We have remained steadfast in our resolve that we have always [had] the party’s interests at heart and not our own individual aspirations or needs. We have always and will continue to protect the party as an institution that must outlive us all, and we have demonstrated that point by declining to stand as candidates on our parliamentary list,” he said.
Kauandenge noted that the party will commence its election campaign programme with the launch of its manifesto this weekend in Otjinene.
