Nghikembua warns election officials against carelessness
Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) chairperson Elsie Nghikembua sent out a stern warning that the electoral body will not tolerate carelessness by staff members in the undertaking of their duties.
She made the remarks during the official opening of a training workshop for regional electoral officers and returning officers in Swakopmund yesterday.
According to her, the Electoral Act empowers the ECN to withdraw any staff appointments in the event that their duties are neglected.
“The penalties are outlined in Section 176 of the Act and you will be fully oriented about these penalties as part of this training,” she said.
She added that officials’ purpose goes beyond merely facilitating the electoral process. “It is about empowering every Namibian to exercise their democratic rights. Each vote cast is a voice heard, and we must ensure that this voice is echoed in the halls of governance,” Nghikembua said.
Complexities and challenges
According to her, the ECN is fully aware of the possible complexities and challenges that may arise during the electoral process, but remains confident in the capabilities and dedication of its team. “Be it logistical hurdles, public concerns or political dynamics, with rigorous training, open dialogue and teamwork, we can overcome any challenge that we may face.”
The November elections will not just be a test of administrative capability, but also an opportunity to reinforce public trust in the electoral process, the chairperson said.
Nghikembua pointed out that integrity and transparency of electoral processes rely heavily on diligence and professionalism, and commended officials for embodying these values during what she referred to as an “intensive and demanding period”.
Highlighting that elections are the foundation of democracy, she said each time Namibia heads to the polls, it is an opportunity for people to express their aspirations for the future through the leaders they choose. “As regional and constituency heads, you hold an essential role in this democratic process. You are the guardians of the integrity and transparency of our electoral system at grassroot level, and the importance of your training cannot be overstated,” she said.
She further expressed her gratitude for the hard work, dedication and resilience demonstrated during the general registration of voters (GRV). “The GRV marked a huge success in our history as a commission, and a country in particular,” she said.
