The newly re-elected Swapo Party vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah thanked her opponents for their cooperation during the party's seventh congress.

She edged out Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and environment minister Pohamba Shifeta in the race for the position.

She is now the frontrunner to lead the party into the 2024 national and presidential elections and made these remarks in a post-congress audio message to her supporters and rivals.

Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted the trust placed in her by fellow party members and said she's excited to work with everyone in the future.

"I am looking forward to working with you [Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and Shifeta] for us to continue strengthening the party. Swapo is the party for the future and we can only achieve that through unity," she said.

The vice-president added that unity will be her priority, and that a nation with a common goal will always emerge victorious.

"We cannot afford not to be united if we want Swapo to remain victorious. I want to thank all those who have given support to me during this campaign in terms of time, resources and energy.”

Now, hard work

With the ‘political festivities’ coming to an end, she called on politicians to embrace each other and prepare for hard work.

Her entire slate, which comprised of Sophia Shaningwa and Uahekua Herunga for secretary-general and deputy secretary-general respectively, won against their rivals.

Nandi-Ndaitwah and Shaningwa both ascended to those positions in 2017, when they ran on the Team Harambee slate, led by President Hage Geingob at the time.

Geingob also retained his position as Swapo president after the party resolved that he should not be challenged.
